First look at Walmart’s Apple store-within-a-store

Some of the first pictures of Walmart’s new Apple store-within-a-store concept hit the web on Monday, showing a layout and design similar to Apple’s clean and ordered retail outlets.mf First look at Walmarts Apple store within a storeemailthis2 First look at Walmarts Apple store within a storebookmark First look at Walmarts Apple store within a store

Apple Store-within-a-Walmart: the future, or the end of days?

AqjTQfOCQAAk4JD.jpg large 620x465 Apple Store within a Walmart: the future, or the end of days?

There have been Apple Stores inside Best Buy — and their subsidiary, Future Shop in Canada — for a long time now, but Walmart? I haven’t been to Walmart in years, but last time I did the only store-within-a-store they had there was a McDonalds. Well, times change, Apple Retail just keeps growing and growing, and it looks like Walmart is their next growth-vector.

Reader Jesse Martinez sent along these images from the Walmart Superstore in Rogers, Arkansas. Jesse says he was told by the Apple rep that this particular Apple Store-within-a-Walmart-store was a prototype and the first one in the country. Even though the Apple Stores proper are phenomenally successful, and Apple keeps adding more all the time, they just don’t have locations in all the same places as Best Buy (recent closures notwithstanding) or Walmart. The stores-within-a-store help them project at least a little of the Apple experience to many more potential customers.

So is the the future, where Apple Stores-within-a-store armed with knowledgeable Apple reps-within-those-stores start popping up in more and more big boxes? There aren’t competing HP, Samsung, Dell, HTC, or Google retail stores, and there aren’t competing HP, Samsung, Dell, HTC, or Google stores-within-a-store at Best Buy, never mind Walmart. Does this give Apple a significant advantage, or simply risk overextending their brand?

Source: @jmartinez301, thanks Jesse!

Best Buy closing 50 big boxes in 2012, fewer locations for you to buy your Apple gear

best buy closing 50 big boxes in 2012 fewer locations for you to buy your apple gear Best Buy closing 50 big boxes in 2012, fewer locations for you to buy your Apple gear

Best Buy will be closing 50 of their big box stores in 2012, 8 previously announced and 42 more just made official. Most of them will be shut down by mid-May, a last few by July. The release talks about employees, and how they’ll try to find them positions within the organization, but it doesn’t speak clearly about a strategy moving forward. Only:

More broadly, our previously announced retail store actions are intended to increase points of presence, while decreasing overall square footage, for increased flexibility – including key store remodels with a new Connected Store format, while continuing to build out the successful Best Buy Mobile small format stores throughout the U.S. We will continue to share details of such actions as the year progresses. We are committed to making it easier for customers to shop with us, whenever and wherever they want.

I walk into an Apple Store and it’s packed, and there easily a dozen if not a couple dozen Apple Store employees on the floor helping people. I walk into Best Buy and it’s almost always empty — not of customers but of employees. Whole sections are barren wastelands where’s there’s absolutely no one to help you. Or there’s one poor staffer trying to help 3-6 people at once. I often leave, unable to find what I need or get any help, and I know I’m not alone. It’s just not a good retail experience. And that’s what Apple nails with the Apple Store.

Unfortunately, not everyone has an Apple Store near them, and if the Best Buy goes too, it makes it just that much harder to buy iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Macs in a brick and mortar store. Sure, pretty much everyone can buy online, but touching an Apple product, using them, is what drives sales.

Maybe this is a regrouping, a way for Best Buy to do more with less, and make the stores that remain better. If it’s just cost cutting, however, well… seldom does starvation make something grow strong.

Full PR below, hit the source link for a complete list of the stores.

Brings total of store closures to 50 by end of 2012

Most locations will permanently close by May 12; three additional locations to close by late summer

RICHFIELD, Minn. – April 14, 2012 – Best Buy announced plans March 29, 2012 to close 50 U.S. stores as part of a number of key initiatives for this year. To date, we have closed two stores this year (one in Kansas City, Mo., and one in Scottsdale, Ariz.), plus have notified five Twin Cities stores and one San Antonio store that they will close later this year.

This morning, we have confirmed the remaining 42 store locations that will close. A complete list of store locations can be found at the end of this statement. Employees of these 42 stores have been notified this morning.

This was not an easy decision to make. We chose these stores carefully, and are working to ensure the impact to our employees will be as minimal as possible, while serving all customers in a convenient and satisfying way. But we also recognize the impact this news has on the people who deserve respect for the contributions they have made to our business.

We will be working to help these employees find other positions inside Best Buy. If they don’t find new positions, or if they choose not to work at a different location, a transition including severance packages will be available.

Three of these 42 locations remain open today, Saturday; the rest of the affected stores are closed today, and will reopen Sunday, April 15. Customers currently doing business with these stores are being contacted today.

We expect most of these stores will permanently close by May 12. Three additional locations are expected to permanently close later this summer. 2

Best Buy continues to have additional retail store locations – big boxes and standalone Best Buy Mobile stores – for customers to choose from in these affected locations.

Apple Stores exchanging white iPhone 4 models for 4S models due to supply constraints

white iPhone 0211 620x413 Apple Stores exchanging white iPhone 4 models for 4S models due to supply constraints

Some Apple Stores in the United States and Canada are experiencing major supply constraints with the white 16GB iPhone 4. Allegedly the problem is so bad that Apple has instructed genius bar workers to replace customers’ 16GB white iPhone 4 models with iPhone 4S where needed. Multiple sources have apparently confirmed this is currently being implemented.

The replacement model would be a refurbished iPhone 4S 16GB but customers would get a significant upgrade from their iPhone 4; namely a better camera, faster processor and of course Siri. Not all Apple Stores have been affected so far but we are sure that if supply constraints are that bad it won’t be long before they are. Currently the problem only seems to be within the United States and Canada.

If you’ve exchanged your white 16GB white iPhone 4 and received a refurbished 16GB white iPhone 4S, let us know in our iPhone 4 Forum!

Apple Online Store Down with New Look

We typically avoid posting a story each time the Apple Store goes offline for updates. While the Apple online store famously goes offline to introduce new products, it also goes down for routine maintenance.

Tonight’s downtime is likely related to maintenance or other non-product tweaks, but notably the “We’ll be back soon” graphic that should be quite familiar to long time Apple followers has been changed.

The original graphic (above) was on a sticky note and has been in place for many years. Every time Apple’s online store goes down, visitors would be greeted with this yellow sticky. Tonight, we see a new graphic overlaying a linen background that has been popularized in iOS.

Apple has several product lines that are due for updates soon, including the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. These overnight downtimes, however, are more typically related to routine maintenance rather than new products. The change in “We’ll be back” graphic may foreshadow other graphical tweaks to the online store.

Update: The online store returned without any notable changes.

Bartending: Memoirs of an Apple Genius tells the story of the people behind the bar

bartending hackett hero 620x345 Bartending: Memoirs of an Apple Genius tells the story of the people behind the bar

Stephen Hackett of 512pixels.net fame used to work as an Apple Genius and he’s chosen to share his exploits and adventures behind the glass, wood, and aluminum curtain in Bartending: Memoirs of an Apple Genius. He’s also used his considerable prowess as a writer to do so in insightful, humorous form. Here’s the teaser, and it’s a good one:

Being one of the most successful companies in the world has made anything Apple-related newsworthy and special, including working in its retail stores. The truth is that selling computers at the Apple Store isn’t that much different from selling them anywhere else, but it is better.

It’s better because Apple is different than most other companies. Despite its monstrous success and growth the last few years, the company has not lost its focus on providing excellent experiences for its customers.

The Apple Store is the place where those experiences are made far better or far worse. Being on the front lines means gathering some great war stories. Stephen is here to share a few of his.

From the opening salvo of a young college student who ruined a MacBook in the most unfortunate way, to the trials and tribulations of being on the front end of the iPhone 3G and the MobileMe launch, Hackett pulls few punches. By the end of the book, the Apple Genius will be a little less mysterious, a little more human, and every bit as impressive.

Bartending: Memoirs of an Apple Genius is available now in Amazon Kindle and ePub (iBooks compatible) formats for just $4.99.

Get it now at GeniusMemoirs.com.
