Anyone in the U.S. who bought a first or second-gen iPod touch between September 12, 2007 and and March 31, 2009 are eligible to get in on an antitrust lawsuit against Apple. The two complaints state that Apple broke federal and state laws by charging for iOS updates and prevented iPods from playing anything that wasn’t bought through iTunes. The litigating class membership includes just about every iPod model, including classic, shuffle, and nano.

Although I was peeved when Apple had the gall to charge for an iOS update on my first-gen iPod touch, just so that users could get email and other apps that came for free with the iPhone, it was easy enough to work around. Apple’s story about GAAP vs. non-GAAP accounting methods and reasons for insisting on the charge were overly complex and ultimately user hostile. Which is probably why Apple stopped charging for iOS software updates entirely.

I’m still not sure why the lawsuit is claiming that iTunes wouldn’t allow outside music sources; from the sounds of it, that situation was isolated to a few types of incompatible DRM, but that’s it. Basically, if you bought something from Real (remember them?) or something protected by Windows DRM, it wouldn’t play on your iPod. If you had iTunes music with FairPlay DRM or DRM-free MP3s from any source, you were good to go.

Right now there’s not much to do besides wait to see how the case pans out and collect what will likely be a five dollar refund for what you paid for the firmware update. You can get updates by signing up at the class-action suit site, or opt out of the case if you’re crazy and intend on going after Apple separately for the same issue.

Apparently this case has been hounding Apple for awhile; do you guys see any legitimacy to it?

For whom this tutorial:

This guide is for iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G users who have already saved the SHSH+APTicket for the iOS version you are downgrading your device to. If you didn’t save SHSH+APTicket, you won’t do this now and unfortunately you are out of luck.

Why iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3 is not included:

iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new-iPad (know as iPad 3) are not included as these devices are not exploitable using Geohot’s Limera1n exploit.

How to downgrade 5.1 to 5.0.1 / 5.0 /  5.1:

Requirements:

Saved SHSH blobs for the firmware you download to (5.0.1 / 5.0 / 5.1)
Download iFaith for Windows
Download iTunes – Windows / Mac
Download iOS 5.0.1 , iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.1 for your (iPhone, iPad or iTouch)

Step 1: Run iFaith, and choose “Build *signed* IPSW w/Blobs” > “Build IPSW”

Step 2: Now browse the saved SHSH blobs file for iOS 5.0.1 / 5.0 / 5.1.

Step 3: Now browse for the ipsw file of iOS 5.0.1 / 5.0 / 5.1

Step 4: iFaith will cook the custom firmware of 5.0.1 / 5.0 / 5.1 with SHSH blobs.

Step 5: Now from iFaith choose “Use DFU Pwner (iREB)”

Step 6: Finally open iTunes and restore your iDevice to the new custom firmware, that’s it.

Well, iPhone Dev team published and released a new version of Redsn0w that allows unlocker in saving the unlock activation tickets resulting from the new SAM unlock solution. Redsn0w 0.9.10 b8 has a new button that lets you backup the activation tickets. Download redsn0w 0.9.10 b8 for both windows and Mac from the links below after this jump.

As we reported you yesterday that the new unlock method with SAM which allows you to unlock any jailbroken iPhone on any baseband running any firmware, should be done for each SIM card you will use in your iPhone. Now Redsnow 0.9.10 b8 will help you to save the activation ticket located in / var/root / Library / Lockdown for each SIM card with one click instead of saving them manually, thanks Dev-team.

Redsn0w 0.9.10b 8 adds the ability to backup arbitrary directories or files from your device into a zip file on your Mac or PC. The new button is Extras->Even More->Backup and it requires your device to be jailbroken with the afc2 service enabled (most jailbreaks include that).
